What Types of Ferrets are There?

There is only one breed of ferrets that have been domesticated. The other one, the black-footed ferret is wild and is rare in most parts of the world. However, there are several types of ferrets classified in terms of the wide color range and patterns. So, What Type of Ferrets are There?

In this article, I am going to talk about the different types of ferrets. As I have mentioned, ferrets come in a wide variety of colors. Also, the color patterns and their sizes are used to determine the type of ferret.

Below are some of the most common types of ferrets that there are:

Albino ferrets

As in human species, albino ferrets lack pigments. They have a white undercoat and hair guards. Sometimes the undercoat can have a tint of cream.

Albino ferrets have red eyes accompanied by a pink nose. Most albino ferrets will resemble each other. They are an adorable bundle of fur to cuddle and keep as a pet. The downside of owning an albino ferret is that they are prone to auditory problems.

Black ferrets

This one is so direct. A black ferret will have a white undercoat and a black outer coat. Sometimes it can be mixed up with several patches of brown fur. However, the black ferret does not have a lot of patches. His outer coat is mostly black.

Also, the black ferret will have black eyes. His nose might have a dark brown nose. If he has patches, it will be mostly on his head.

Black sable ferret

Black sable ferrets have blackish-brown outer hair. The undercoat can range from white to cream. If you spot a black sable ferret in the stores near you, you will realize that they lack warm colors. I mean, the rest of his body will have a blackish-brown color.

However, I do not mean that they are less adorable. You will get sucked into their adorable dark brown and sometimes black eyes. This comes with a set of blackish brown nose. Unlike black ferrets, black sable ferrets can be distinguished by the presence of the brownish color.

Cinnamon ferrets

Cinnamon ferrets are hard to come by. They have a beautiful reddish-brown color with a white undercoat. The cinnamon ferret has burgundy eyes, which could be light or dark.

This ferret can have a beige or pink nose to complete their adorable faces.

Champagne ferrets

This type of ferrets has a tan or light brown outer coat. As with most ferrets, the champagne ferret has a cream or white undercoat.

The color of the champagne ferret’s eye is a dark burgundy. His nose might be beige, beige with a pink pattern, or pink with brownish speckles.

The chocolate ferret

The chocolate ferrets are not as rare as the cinnamon ferrets. In fact, you will find that most ferrets in the pet store are chocolate ferrets.

Well, these ferrets have chocolate brown outer fur. Their undercoat might range from gold to white with a pair of brown or dark burgundy eyes.

On his face, a chocolate ferret is most likely to have a brown mask exempting his eye and mouth area. Just like the champagne ferret, the chocolate ferret will have pink or beige with a pink nose. Sometimes he might have a pink nose with brown patches.

Sable ferret

This is a common type of ferrets. They have beautiful dark brown fur and a white undercoat. Some sable ferrets may have a cream undercoat instead.

Just like the black sable ferret, this one will also have blackish-brown eyes. This is accompanied by a pink nose, which might have a T shaped brown patterns.

The dark-eyed white ferret

The dark-eyed ferret resembles the albino ferret. The only difference is that they have black or burgundy eyes.

Now, as I mentioned above, different criteria are used to determine what type of ferrets are there. While the color remains the major method used to determine the type of ferret we cannot forget to mention the pattern on the colors.

What type of ferret are there?

Below, we are going to look at the ferret classification in terms of color pattern:

Mitt ferrets

These ferrets will have white-colored legs. This color will go up to the ankle level. At the same time, mitt ferrets may have a white color under their necks. This is commonly referred to as the bib.

Blaze ferrets

For a ferret to be classified as the blaze, he has to have a white stripe running down his head. It may start on his forehead and run down to the back of the neck.

Also, blaze ferrets have quite a unique appearance. They will have a pair of red or brown eyes accompanied by a pink nose. The feet might also have tiny patterns of the white color.

Panda

As with the name, panda ferrets will have patches around their eyes. They will usually have a white head and neck. The knees of a panda ferret might be patched as well with a white tip.

They usually come with dark red eyes and a set of pink nose. In most cases, panda ferrets will not have a mask on their face.

Point

There is a wide variety of colors for point ferrets. However, a white ferret cannot be a point. Might have a T-shaped mask on their face. At the same time, not all point ferrets will have masks, for example, the champagne ferret discussed earlier.

Point ferrets will have different colors in different parts of their body. They will have a light-colored set of nose.

Roan

As with point ferrets, roan ferrets will have a wide variety of colors but never white. However, these ferrets have white guard hairs for almost half of their body. The rest of the body will be covered with colored hairs.

Solid

Most ferrets have a white undercoat. Solid ferrets will have a single color throughout their body. No white hair should be visible through the coating.

Well, this is an exemption of white ferrets. This makes these ferrets very easy to classify and identify. They are also among the cutest ferrets.

Stripped

Once again, a white ferret is exempted from this classification. These ferrets can have just about any other color. They have about 90% white hair guards with colored hairs sprinkled all through his body.

Alternatively, your ferret could have colored spots. Sometimes it could be a stripe down the ferret’s back.

Standard

The standard ferret may have a different range of colors. As with the solid ferrets, this type of ferret will have no white outer hair. The only difference is that their coat color is not as concentrated as that in the solid type.

In most cases, the standard ferret will have a full face mask or a simple T shaped color.

Conclusion

As discussed above, you can see that ferret classification is a difficult task. You would have to be very specific with the color of your ferret as well as any patterns. Note that when seasons change, ferrets do shed or grow a thicker coat.

Also, some ferrets do change their hair color as they grow older. However, the above list highlights the most common types of ferrets. Due to health and weather changes, ferrets could have different patterns and hair color, which makes it impossible to identify the exact color.
